                                               the neighbor's girl waves
                                               at passing cars




                         
                 a baby's voice                                       she brings me cake
                 in the other room                                   i bring her
                 dawn through the curtains                       empty tins






                                                 freezing rain
                                                 maiden hair fern
                                                 gone white





                split halves of the same log
                roll together
                in the fire
